Framatom Bulgaria EOOD has been given a €24.97 million contract by Kozloduy NPP EAD, Bulgaria's top nuclear plant, to perform technical maintenance on the systems and equipment at Units 5 and 6 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). Signed on August 1, 2025, the three-year contract includes technological updates, spare parts supply, modernisation, and preventative maintenance for equipment that was initially produced by Siemens AG and AREVA NP GmbH. On August 8, 2025, the procurement was formally published in the EU Official Journal S 151/2025.
Providing Safety and Dependability at Bulgaria's Most Important Energy Asset
The awarded contract, which is worth €24,968,864 (VAT excluded), intends to maintain the safety and operational dependability of Kozloduy NPP's high-voltage switchgear and controlgear systems, which are essential to the production of power in Bulgaria and the stability of the grid. Preventive and corrective maintenance, diagnostics, hardware and software updates, and specialised personnel training are all part of the project.
Work will be done at the Kozloduy location in Vratsa Province (BG313) over the 36-month contract period. In accordance with EU Directive 2014/25/EU, the procurement was carried out through a negotiated process with previous publication. The lowest price criterion was used for selection, with a focus on cost-effectiveness for Bulgaria's public energy infrastructure.
Since more than one-third of Bulgaria's electricity is produced by the country's sole nuclear power station, Kozloduy NPP, this maintenance contract is strategically important for both EU grid resilience and national energy security. The project serves Bulgaria's long-term objective of secure and sustainable energy production while guaranteeing adherence to international nuclear safety requirements by enlisting leading European nuclear and electrical engineering firms.
Despite not being funded by EU funding, the project supports competition and openness in public procurement by adhering to the Government Procurement Agreement (GPA).
A division of the international Framatome Group, Framatome Bulgaria EOOD focuses on nuclear systems engineering, component modernisation, and solutions for plant life extension. The company's participation supports the Kozloduy NPP's continuous modernisation effort and enhances Bulgaria's domestic nuclear expertise.
Framatome Bulgaria's award of the Kozloduy NPP maintenance contract demonstrates Bulgaria's dedication to ensuring the efficient, safe, and dependable functioning of its nuclear infrastructure. At one of the most important energy assets in Southeast Europe, improved operational performance and technical resilience are anticipated as a result of the cooperation between local and foreign partners over the course of the next three years.
